Help and FAQ
Short answers to the questions we get most. If yours is not here, write to us.
Accounts
Do I need an account?
You can read lessons and look at challenges without one. You need an account to submit flags, join a team, register for events and teach.
I forgot my password.
There is no automatic reset email yet. Write to us on the contact page from the email address of the account, choose the topic Help with my account, and an admin will set a new password.
Can I change my username?
Not yourself. Your username is the name on scoreboards, so it stays fixed. Ask on the contact page if there is a good reason. You can change your display name and bio on your account page.
Can I have more than one account?
No. One person, one account. Accounts that share a network address are put in a review queue; an admin looks at them before doing anything, because families and schools share connections.
What does restricted mean?
A restricted account can read everything but cannot submit flags and is hidden from scoreboards while the case is reviewed. A banned account cannot sign in.
Flags and points
What does a flag look like?
Every flag has the form CTF-ORION{some_text} with no spaces. Paste the whole thing, including the braces.
It says the flag is wrong, but I am sure.
Check for a trailing space, a missing brace, or a flag you found in a different challenge. Flags are case sensitive. In events your team has its own flag, so a flag from a write-up or a friend will not work.
How are points decided?
By level: Beginner 100, Easy 200, Medium 300, Hard 400, Insane 500. Practice flags inside lessons are worth 0 and never reach a scoreboard.
Is there a limit on tries?
Yes. Each player can try a few times per minute on a challenge. This stops guessing by script, which is not allowed.
Do hints exist?
Read the story twice, check the file type and metadata, and try the Foundations lessons. Teachers can also write lessons that lead into a challenge.
Teams
How big can a team be?
Up to 25 members. Create a team on your account page, then share its join code. Anyone with the code can join until the team is full.
Can I switch teams?
Yes, by leaving one team and joining another, unless you are registered to an event that is running. During an event your team is locked until it ends.
How are team scores counted?
A team gets the points for a challenge once, whichever member solved it. Players also keep their own solo score. Team and solo boards are separate.
Events
What is the difference between an event and practice?
Practice challenges are open all the time. An event has a start and end time, its own scoreboard, and gives every team a unique version of each flag.
Which time zone do events use?
Times on the site are shown in Bangladesh time (UTC+6).
Do I have to register?
Yes, register on the event page before it ends. You can register after it has started.
A team shared a flag. What happens?
A flag that belongs to another team shows up as a case for the admins. If confirmed, the teams involved can be restricted or banned, and the sharer can be named on the integrity page.
Teaching and hosting
How do I teach?
Open the teach page and press Start teaching. You get a studio where you write paths, lessons and challenges. Everything is reviewed by an admin before it is published.
Who owns what I write?
You do. By submitting you let CTF-ORION show it to learners for free. You can ask us to remove it. See the terms for the exact wording.
How do I host my own CTF?
Send a proposal on the host page. If approved, your organisation gets a page at ctforion.com/your-name, and the admin team creates your event with you.
Still stuck?
Write to us with what you tried. For account problems, write from the email address of the account.
