Encodings

25 min

An encoding is a way to write the same data in another form. It hides nothing: anyone can reverse it.

Spot them

  • Hex uses 0-9 and a-f: 48656c6c6f
  • Base64 uses letters, digits, + and /, often ends with =: SGVsbG8=
  • URL encoding uses % and two hex digits: Hello%20World
$ echo SGVsbG8= | base64 -d
Hello
